How Basketball Data Helps Guide Texas A&M Women's Team to Early Conference Wins
After the holidays, many teams struggle to get back on track. But not Texas A&M Women’s Basketball. Their Strength and Conditioning coach uses data and analytics to avoid a slump and start fast in conference play.
A couple of years ago, Texas A&M Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for women’s basketball, Yolanda Berryhill, noticed something with her ‘coach’s eye’ when the team returned from its Christmas vacation. “We didn’t look, move, or perform how we did before the holiday break,” she said.
Which is a problem since conference play starts in early January.
Without a solid plan, they faced a noticeable dip in performance as conference play began. However, Coach Berryhill and Sports Science fellow, Drew Smith, used KINEXON PERFORM IMU data to find cracks in their approach, leading to a pivotal “ah-ha” moment for both.
They found that they needed to adjust one specific metric to fill the performance gap. And the results were immediate.
“We got them ready,” Coach Berryhill said. “Our performance has significantly improved.”
By using basketball analytics and making informed adjustments, “Coach Yo”, as she is called on campus, and her staff better prepared their players for conference play.
