Why European Basketball Coaches Need Analytics to Manage the Grueling Season

Basketball is a physically demanding sport that requires players to perform at high levels of intensity, speed, and skill. However, not all basketball seasons are created equal. In Europe, the basketball season is notoriously long and grueling, posing significant challenges for players and coaches alike.

The European basketball season typically runs for about 8 – 9 months, from late September or early October to late May or early June. This is much longer than the NBA season, which lasts for about 6 – 7 months, from late October to mid-June.

The European season is not only longer, but also more congested, as teams often must play multiple competitions simultaneously, such as domestic leagues, continental cups, and international tournaments.

European Basketball Seasons Are a Grind

For example, a team that participates in the EuroLeague, FIBA Europe Cup, and the FIBA EuroBasket could play up to 100 games in a single season, compared to the NBA’s maximum of 82 regular-season games and 28 playoff games.

If teams participate in either one European competition like the EuroLeague, plus the games from the domestic league and the player is also part of the National Team squad the total number of games during one season is about 100 games or more.

Depending on the situation, if there is a World Cup or Euro Cup this year and/or an Olympic tournament like in 2024, a team/player in the EuroLeague, FIBA Europe Cup, FIBA Champions League and/or the National Team could play up to (or even more than) 100 games.

Such a demanding schedule can take a toll on the players’ health, performance, and longevity. Playing too many games in a brief period can increase the risk of fatigue, injury, and burnout, as well as reduce the quality of play and enjoyment of the game. That is why it is crucial for coaches to manage their players’ workload effectively and efficiently, especially in the offseason, when players need to recover and prepare for the next season.

Basketball Analytics Can Help with Load Management

Basketball shot tracking apps can help both men’s and women’s coaches monitor their players’ load, by using various metrics, including:

  • Volume
  • Intensity
  • Frequency
  • Duration
  • Density of the workouts

Load can also be influenced by external factors, such as travel, weather, and altitude.

KINEXON Sport’s shot load metric indicates when a player is not exerting themselves to the extent needed when confronted by a defense. If most the player’s shot attempts in practice are categorized as Low Shot Load, it raises doubts about their ability to sustain shooting efficiency when confronted with Medium or High Shot Load situations in an actual game.

By tracking and managing their players’ load, coaches can optimize their training and recovery cycles. Coaches can tailor their workouts to the specific needs and goals of each player, based on many factors, including:

  • Position
  • Role
  • Injury history
  • Performance level

For example, a young point guard who needs to improve his speed and agility may have a different load than a veteran center who needs to maintain his strength and endurance.

Take the First Step to Better Basketball

The European basketball season is grueling for players and coaches. To cope with this challenge, coaches should use sports analytics to manage their players’ load, which can help them improve their players’ health, performance, and longevity, as well as their team’s success and satisfaction.

When the NBA comes to Berlin, it brings elite athletes, global attention, and a look behind the scenes of modern basketball. Today, professional basketball teams rely heavily on performance analytics to prepare for games, manage player load, and stay competitive throughout a long season. Basketball performance analysis has become a standard part of how teams train, compete, and recover at the highest level.

Why Tracking Player Performance Data Makes Soccer Training More Effective for Match Day

In soccer, player readiness creates a competitive advantage that clubs can’t overlook. Winning second balls, sprinting while attacking the offensive zone during stoppage time, and executing decisive presses are the marginal moments that define matches. Clubs that keep more players prepared throughout the season consistently perform at a higher level.

The mantra practice how you play” is echoed in locker rooms around the world. Basketball players can record thousands of shots during a week of practice or individual training sessions, but if shooting percentages only define if a player is consistent from a specific spot on the floor, why isn’t every athlete shooting at a high-level during games?
