How Force-Velocity Profiling is Changing the Game in Modern Football Training

In elite football, where margins are razor-thin, traditional training approaches often fall short. Force-Velocity (F‑V) Profiling has emerged as a game-changing tool that empowers coaches to personalize performance programs, reduce injuries, and elevate player readiness.

In our latest case study, former VfL Wolfsburg Strength & Conditioning Coach Chris Tebel (2018 – 2023) reveals how he integrated F‑V Profiling and KINEXON technology into a dynamic, player-first performance system. Curious how this approach works in practice? Read on for the highlights — and download the full case study for a detailed breakdown here

Training for Modern Match Demands

Football has evolved. Fast transitions, explosive sprints, and repeat efforts under pressure are the new normal. According to Tebel: Force-Velocity profiling gives us a deeper understanding of each player’s sprint mechanics and performance capacity. This allows us to tailor training much more precisely.”

F‑V Profiling captures a biomechanical snapshot of a player’s sprinting ability, revealing how they produce force and reach velocity. This data becomes the foundation for targeted, individualized interventions.

Turning Data Into Action

Using KINEXON’s GPS and LPS technologies, Tebel and his team seamlessly embedded F‑V Profiling into regular training sessions. No labs or timing gates needed. Just high-quality, real-time data captured on the pitch.

Based on these insights, athletes were assigned to one of three targeted development groups:

  • Strength Group: Focused on building force through velocity-based lifts.
  • Power Group: Prioritized rapid force application with faster bar speeds and loaded jumps.
  • Acceleration Group: Trained with resisted sprints to sharpen quickness.

Each group followed a tailored plan on MD4 (four days before match day), combining gym work with pitch-based sprinting. Low-minute players received an extra session on MD+1

Making It Game-Relevant: Position-Specific Speed Work

Training didn’t end in the weight room. Tebel built sprint sessions around football-specific actions:

  1. Warm-Up: Sprint mechanics and stride drills
  2. Tactical Drills: Match-like sprint sequences integrated into drills (passes, shots, positional play)
  3. Maximal Output: Competitive 40-meter duels reaching ≥95% top speed

This structure not only improved top-end speed but also built resilience against soft tissue injuries.

Improved Strength Training with Microdosing

Traditional S&C routines often clash with tight football schedules. Tebel embraced microdosing: short, high-quality strength sessions spread across the week. Rooted in Post-Activation Potentiation (PAP), these lifts primed athletes for technical work instead of exhausting them.

The power of F‑V Profiling lies in its frequency. With multiple data points per week, coaches could adapt on the fly, manage load, and flag early signs of fatigue: > We need to understand not just how fast a player is, but how often and how efficiently they can reproduce that speed in game-like situations.”

The Impact: Personalized, Sustainable Performance

Thanks to this integrated approach, Tebel achieved:

  • Precise individualization
  • Fewer injuries
  • Better match readiness
  • Sustainable year-round development

Force-Velocity Profiling isn’t just a trend — it’s a foundational strategy for modern football. With expert leadership, precise data, and the right tools, clubs can move from reactive to proactive training models that keep players sharp, healthy, and game-ready.
