Handball-Bundesliga Extends Sports Data Contract With KINEXON Through 2029
Munich, Germany — February 27, 2024 — HBL will rely on KINEXON for sports data until 2029. The top German professional (team) handball league extended its collaboration with the sports analytics company. Key pillars of the collaboration include digitalization, as KINEXON data continues to drive digital innovation. Using KINEXON’s mobile systems, clubs are able to identify training overload early. The data helps the HBL create value for fans, partners and the new media business.
Cologne, 27.02.2023 — Handball-Bundesliga GmbH continues its innovation-oriented cooperation with KINEXON Sports & Media GmbH. KINEXON, one of the leading companies in the field of player and ball tracking, will continue to track the comprehensive data of all professional players and each match ball in the LIQUI MOLY Handball Bundesliga for the next six seasons and, together with HBL GmbH, will process and further develop this data for a variety of uses.
KINEXON — already a technology service provider for HBL GmbH in this area since the 2019 – 20 season — will remain closely linked to the digitalization strategy of the LIQUI MOLY Handball Bundesliga until at least the end of the 2028 – 29 season. As part of the long-term extension, KINEXON will continue automatically recording all position and ball data from all 306 LIQUI MOLY HBL matches. The agreement also covers the Pixum Super Cup between champions and cup winners and four matches in the REWE Final 4 tournament for the DHB Cup.

“In recent years, we have been very successful in deepening the sport of handball with the help of live performance data. Our fans, media and partners benefit from this. In addition, we can communicate our professionals’ extraordinary achievements to a demanding, younger audience. HBL GmbH will continue to work closely with the clubs and KINEXON in the coming years to digitize and visualize what happens on the court. In the decade of handball, we can contribute to making the game even more tangible, exciting and valuable through this innovative technology.”
“The potential of live data exploitation and marketing is far from exhausted. KINEXON’s ambition is to provide more than just live data. We want to improve the sports experience for all stakeholders — that means healthier, more entertaining, surprising, informative, and unique. With Handball-Bundesliga GmbH, we have an internationally renowned league partner that shares this vision. This is a great opportunity for the digitization of handball!”
The innovative cooperation, which is exemplary for German professional sports, will be intensified and further developed, especially in data visualization and marketing. HBL GmbH is thus consistently pursuing its digitalization strategy and creating the additional potential for fan experiences, media coverage and sponsorship models. In close cooperation with its long-standing innovation partner DKB, HBL GmbH is setting new standards in developing and using performance-related data.
While the cooperation has been limited to match operations, all 18 clubs in the LIQUI MOLY HBL now have the opportunity to use KINEXON technology in training with the help of mobile systems. Frank Bohmann, Managing Director of the HBL, comments: “We also want to use the data better for analysis purposes in training. The continuous monitoring and analysis of relevant performance parameters in competition and training will help coaches and trainers to identify overload and injury risks as early as possible.”
“The partnership with the LIQUI MOLY Handball Bundesliga and all its stakeholders is an elementary part of KINEXON’s strategic cooperation with leagues and associations, which we are happy about. We are delighted with the trust that the HBL has placed in us. Together with the HBL and its partners, we will change handball forever. In addition to the media use of the data, every club will be able to work with the data on a daily basis.”
In preparation for the upcoming media contract, which will take effect in the 2023 – 24 season, HBL GmbH is focusing on integrating the collected tracking data into 360-degree media coverage, so that live and non-live coverage of all aspects of professional Bundesliga handball will become even more attractive, valuable and understandable thanks to additional statistics, visualizations, and explanations. KINEXON will support the editorial teams of HBL GmbH, the clubs and future media partners in processing the collected data and telling the resulting stories. HBL GmbH expects this to add significant value to its reporting and marketing.
